Having a Basenji Means...

September 1, 2006

Basenjis are best known for the fact that they are barkless*...but there is a lot more to them. The barkless thing is all fine and good, but they can be a serious pain in the ass. They are super-smart and calm in appearance, but their little brains are churning all of the time. I always say, "They may be bad, but they're quiet!"

*Barkless, maybe, but not mute. However, ours are indeed silent most of the time.

Without further ado, having a Basenji means...

>
Always having someone around who is more intrested in what you're doing than you are.
Never having a place to sit.
Teenytiny little eyelash-like hairs on the furniture.
A covered kitchen garbage can. (Unless you like to clean up messes everyday.)
Several loads of bath towels on laundry day.
Always having the warmest spot in the house pointed out to you.
Closed bathroom doors.
Special leashes and collars to make sure that they can NEVER GET AWAY FROM YOU ON A WALK. (A Basenji will generally NOT come when called, unless you suddenly come up with liver treats or something.)

We call this The Contraption...it's a special harness/collar combo that I made myself. Ike can back out of harnesses or collars, even Martingale or choker collars. But this baby covers all the bases.
Never having to sleep alone, even when your spouse is out of town.
We'll finish up here with a little movie of Ike.

In this clip, I'm saying some of Ike's favorite words to get a reaction out of him. Petsmart? Walk? Beach?

Don't worry. Since this video amounts to teasing the poor doggie, he got about a million kisses after I shot it. He forgives me.

If you want to learn more about Basenjis, you can read about them on the Basenji Rescue site.
Whoops! One last thing...

If you haven't seen the treadmill video by OK Go, please check it out. It is amazing! I can barely stay on the treadmill when all I'm trying to do is walk!
