Stand Back...
Blackbelt Knitter in Training

August 24, 2006

Yesterday I received the materials for the Master Knitting Program for Advanced Knitters. Or MAKNIPAK, as I just decided to call it. Why am I doing it? Mainly, because I had some $$ to spend as part of our repatriation back to the US with Chris' company. Also, I'm hoping to learn a few things. Lastly, my knitting might finally get some respect around this house.

Nobody messes with a blackbelt, right?

So I got all of my materials together and I started with the first swatch. The swatches, questions/answers, reports, etc. are all put into a notebook and sent around the country to be judged by certified Master Knitters.

The instructions say to choose a "smooth, light-colored, worsted weight" yarn. I chose Cascade 220, in pink, duh.

This first swatch specifically shows my ability to do 2x2 ribbing, unobtrusive increasing, and garter stitch.
A few of the things I'll need to complete this certification.

I don't need The Knitting Answer Book yet...but I'm going to need reference materials. I want to be sure to do everything correctly, or the swatches won't be accepted.
I'm a strictly ONE PROJECT AT A TIME kind of a girl, but I've eased up on that for a bit. The massive steeking Christmas project is the sort of thing that I need to step away from every once in a while, so I've allowed myself a few projects on the needles.

I just finished the knitting on this baby sweater from the Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino book (still needs seaming and blocking).

But I have a bone to pick with Ms. Bliss...
Why oh why do the instructions tell me to cast on a bunch of stitches for the hood, only to have to seam everything together later? Casting on like this always makes for tight and twisted stitches, and seaming is never fun.

I snapped this photo before I ripped the few rows of hood out, and decided to knit the hood right on the neckline instead.

After that, I picked up stitches and did an increase row to bring me up to the right number of stitches.
But that's not all! I have yet ANOTHER project going. Here are the beginnings of a Christmas gift (that's all I can tell you for now). I'm using Knit Picks Andean Silk. Nice yarn, especially in this cinammon color.
Changing subjects totally...

I went to the doctor, and I got The GERD. GERD officially stands for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, but I would call it FLOPSADBIME. That stands for, "For the Love of Puppies, Stomach Acids Don't Belong in My Ears".

It's true. Not only did my stomach acids creep up into my throat, but they made the journey all the way to my ears. Since one's stomach acids don't belong in one's ears, it really hurt. It's going to take a while to heal.

I've used my new best friends, Nexium and Carafate, to demonstrate.
In other news, Chris has grown to twice the size of a normal human!
When I am a Ninja Blackbelt Knitter (3 levels to go), this will be my posse.

We will join together and fight crimes against knitting.

Then again, maybe not. This posse has a bad habit of eating yarn.
