Secret Blocking Party

November 8, 2006

Yes - this week is blocking week for all of the Christmas gifts I knit. Blocking, for you non-knitters, is the washing and shaping process of the knitted garment. Needless to say, my house smells like wet wool. The dogs are convinced that I have a flock of rain-soaked sheep in the spare bedroom, and they're clamoring to get in there.

So I can't show you any blocking pictures, but here are a few things I can show you...

First, I bring you a voting story from yesterday. It's so nice to be back in the US and voting in person again.

I walked into the polling place and flashed my voter's registration card. The man behind the desk said, "Oh, I can't say your last name."

I thought, What's the problem? It's easy to pronounce. Five letters. Rhymes with "merry". Then I asked, "Why not?"

He whispered, "Because it's on the ballot!"

Sure enough, there was someone who shares my last name on the ballot. To say my name could be considered promoting that candidate in the polling place, which is illegal.

Since I'm a smartass, I asked him, "What if there was a candidate named 'And'?"
My winter shoe shopping is almost finished! Just need to find a new pair in navy.

Houston's climate still freaks me out. Converse shouldn't be considered a winter shoe.
Okay Basenji people, put on your thinking caps.

Find the Basenji hazard in this photo...
That's right! It's the sneaky piece of yarn (Cascade 220, black) poking out of the cabinet.

Near disaster, that was.
On the needles: "Tweed Beret" from the new issue of Interweave Knits. I know I said that I was knitting my last Christmas present when I showed you a bit of the red thing, and I was. I'm now knitting a second beret to replace the first, because I like this pattern better.
I'll leave you with a little movie of Ike, sort of. Lou CAN'T STAND it if he's not the center of attention, so he usually is. Here's proof.

If you're wondering what Ike is chewing, it's a stinky-stinky hoof. They sell them at the pet supply store, and my dogs love them.
