Yeah, I Can Read

October 27, 2006

I'm doing something a bit different at verypink today...not that there is ever a *normal* post around here.

Books have been a pretty hot topic of discussion via email with some of you, as well as in the comments, too.

Here are my favorite books. I know I'm forgetting a few, but after plowing through my Amazon "Items You Own" list (408 items), here are the best.

Two notes - first, these are all of my favorite novels. I didn't include any of the non-fiction I read (nor any knitting books). Also, these are in no particular order.

I hope this list leads to good suggestions from you for future reads!

Gotta be on my Top 5 List.

Margaret Atwood is one of my faves (there is more of her on this list.)
I got swept up in this one, but I honestly don't remember how it ends. I love stories about China.
Not for the faint of heart.

Chuck Palahniuk wrote Fight Club and a few other really good books. I really like his work, but most people probably find it a bit too...I don't know how to describe it.

I loaned this book to a friend once, and she gave it back to me without finishing it. She also said that she would never again use the deposit envelopes available at ATMs. Hmm.
Really like this one as well as A Prayer for Owen Meany and World According to Garp.
I don't often read "romancey" books, but this one is only a little bit cheesy. Mostly it's a good, long story that allows you to get lost.
I read this whole series, because it is so good. You know how sometimes you want to read a story that just kind of bounces along, without any plane crashes or three-ways or voodoo dolls? This is a nice read about nice people.
Steinbeck. In my Top 5 List.
I had never heard of this series of books until our Irish neighbor in Holland turned me on. It's a series of books about a Swedish family that moves to America and starts farming, taking place about 100 years ago. (Could be my family story.)

There are several books in the series, and they're totally entertaining.
I said it before...I love reading books about China. Especially ancient Chinese royalty.
Okay, this book is totally depressing, but really good. Do not attempt to read this if you are at all emotionally unstable for whatever reason.
I don't understand why this book hasn't gotten more attention! It is on my Top 5 List. (In fact, BBC made a tv movie based on the story recently.)

I think it might be ignored because it is considered "lesbian literature" in some circles. But that term brings to mind something kind of hardcore, and this book is not! Just a little innocent girl-on-girl attraction (not action), nothing more.
Again, not for the faint of heart. But possibly in my Top 5 List.
In my Top 5 List. (There are probably more than 5 books on this list by now.)

Such a good book.
Pearl Buck. Gotta love her work (I'm reading the next book in the trilogy now). Another book about China.
Steinbeck again.
This is the book I most recently finished. Maybe slightly rough in some places, but a very creative and well-planned story.
This book is only here for representation for every single thing that David Sedaris has written. I've read it all, I love it all. (Can it all be on my Top 5 List??)
Margaret Atwood again. Top 5 List again. Kinda creepy in some places.
This is my favorite kids book. SOOOOOO funny.
This is non-fiction that reads like fiction. An amazing work of journalism.
I read this ages ago and I can hardly remember it, but I remember that I loved it.
I can't wait to see this movie!!
Can I add any more to my Top 5 List? Should I make it a Top 10?

This story is full of good surprises. I want to read it again now that I'm thinking about it.
Top 5 List.
This book is like 3 inches thick, printed in a tiny font size, on superthin paper.

If you don't find that daunting, then you might enjoy the story.

I love history, historical fiction, and stories about royalty.
I tried reading this book once, and I couldn't finish it for some reason. The second time I tried, I was totally engrossed. Can't explain it.

This is a really unique story that keeps you guessing. You can't assume anything.
