Favorite Handmade Gifts

August 30, 2006

I'm a crafty sort of person, and therefore, I like to give handmade gifts. I think the whole world should do the same, naturally.

But not everyone has the time or confidence (I'm not going to say talent) to do the handmade gifts thing. I understand that. When someone does give me a handmade gift, I gush and ooh and aah and run around in circles and speak in tongues. That's how much I love them.

The first handmade gift I have is also our newest. Chris was complaining about how an ex-girlfriend walked off with his favorite pottery salsa bowl. (This was like, a decade ago. He is still bitter about the salsa bowl.) Chris' drinkin' buddy's girlfriend, Holli, made him (us) a new one.

I hope he thanked her profusely. I love this little thing.
This is handmade and from Chris, but he didn't make it himself.

A wooden monkey in a fez? I can't help but smile every time I see it's googley eyes.
My friend Mimi made this bellydance tape for me in the early 90s. I don't bellydance, but I still like the music to this day.
This is the oldest item in the lineup...my baby blanket. All pink and good. My maternal grandmother made this for me. As I knitter, I see endless hours of labor. This is a sport-weight yarn, knit into lace and seed stitch panels.

Using sport-weight yarn to knit a baby blanket shows true dedication.
My mom is generally pretty crafty with different things, and this one is her latest gift to me.

She has made me a few other stained glass items, but I knew this one would photograph well.
This was a handmade gift to myself, made by someone else. These are fused-glass coasters. They are so very cool. I found them on etsy in this gal's shop.
Two Christmases ago, my friend Liz (in Holland) gave me this card. I said, "Wow! You made your own cards this year! Where did you find the cool little watercolor paintings?"

She made the cards right down to painting the little watercolors. I stood in awe.
Chris and I were at our friends' house in Seattle, and I was served wine in this goblet. My friend Megu made this in her glass-blowing class. I complimented her enough on her talent that she finally just gave it to me.
Here is another Christmas card from my neighborhood friend in Holland, named Stefanie. Stefanie is obviously a little girl. But she's crafty! Right down to the inside of the card...
Where she jazzed it up with jewels and did her best at writing in English for me.
I guess this falls into the category of "crafty"...and it's sort of a gift...

Chris made this little gate at the top of the deck stairs so that the dogs can sun themselves without supervision...otherwise, I would worry about them going down to the pool and falling in or something. So it is a gift to me, made with his own two hands. And it perfectly matches the rest of the deck!

That's it for this list...I sure do hope I get more handmade stuff for Christmas this year! But no pressure! But that's what I really want!
To totally change the subject, I leave you with this today instead of a doggie picture.

Always check your spelling.
