Honey, We're Moving to Austin

March 12, 2007

We're not really moving to Austin, I just want to move to Austin.

On Sunday, I made the 2.5 hour drive to attended a knit-bloggers' meet-up in beautiful downtown Austin, Texas at Hill Country Weavers (a great local yarn shop). (I'm not linking to them, because I find it impossible to click "back" from their site to get back here.)

Anyway, I love Austin. The Seattle-ite in me loves the big trees, the craftsman-style homes, and the casual attitude of the city. The knitter in me wishes I could see my friends in Austin more than twice a year.

Here's a pretty good summary of the meet-up: knitting, food, mimosas, talking and laughing.

Don't ask me why I didn't move my handbag out of the shot. Or why I didn't move Kristin's brightly colored sock out from under my camera case to show it off. Huh.
So who did I get to see?

Well, my pal Julia was there...
Kristin, too...
And here I am with both Kristin and Caro.
Since it was a knitblogger event, you know that everyone had their cameras out. We all had to get some good photos to blog about the day.
Here's Christine (who also made the trip from Houston) and Stephen.

I wanted a chance to meet and talk with Stephen, but the room ended up getting really packed. It wasn't easy to mingle, and I didn't really want to shout a conversation with him from our seats. I hope we get a chance to really meet next time.
Here's a funny thing...whenever I make a road trip, I like to save the newest episodes of my favorite podcasts to listen to on the drive. This time I had two back episodes of Stash and Burn to enjoy. I love this new podcast!

THEN, to my surprise, Jenny from Stash and Burn was there! I had a moment of total confusion when I thought she might actually be from Austin...but no. She was there with her husband for SXSW from San Francisco, and they decided to drop in. What a treat! After listening to her voice for a couple of hours in the car, I could have recognized her anywhere.
Another friend I was really happy to see was Meg. She was tired that morning, but she made it. I was so glad she did!

(Neither of us liked the photos we got at the actual event, so this was taken later in the day at lunch.)
And here is the lunch crowd. The man giving us the crazed look is Caro's man, known as The Husband. Caro and The Husband were nice enough to invite me back to their house to check the weather radar, since thunderstorms were moving in. They were also nice enough to offer me a place to crash for the night if the drive home was going to be dangerous.

The storms only lasted a couple of hours, then then were gone. I had a safe drive home.
It was only a day trip, but it was a really, really, really fun day.

What made it even better...I came home to find that the doggies had been fed and walked, and that the house had been tidied. Maybe we don't have to move to Austin. Maybe I can just make the trip out there more often.
