I'm Lou! I Love You!

October 25, 2006

I started this little family introduction series because I had several people ask me how I can tell my dogs apart. I thought - Tell them apart? Do they even look alike at all?? (The answer is yes, but not after you get to know them.) In the continuation of this series, it's Lou's turn.

As of today, Lou has been with us for four months and two days. He's a keeper.

Lou
AKA: Louis, Louie, Luby, Lucifer, Lou-Lou, Little Lou, The Louminator, Looby-Doo, Little Joey Louis.
DOB: January 12, 2004 (We had to make up a birthday for him after the vet told us his approximate age.)

Lou's story starts out pretty rough. He was found wandering the Texas Tech campus in Lubbock. A nice student picked him up, but she couldn't keep him, and he was eventually turned over to Basenji Rescue.

The rescue folks suspect that besides being abandoned, he was probably also abused.

You can see the whole adoption day story here.
Lou is not like any other Basenji I've met. Most Basenjis are aloof, reserved, and contemplative.

Not Lou.

He loves everyone. He's never met a stranger. The world is full of all of his friends. And he wants to make sure he says a wiggly hello to everyone of them.

I find his trust in humans amazing, considering his history.
At home, Lou is my shadow. If I'm sitting at the computer, he's right next to me. If I'm knitting, he's fighting with my knitting for my attention.

When I'm in the bathroom...well, I never get to go to the bathroom by myself.

When I talk to him, he smiles and wags. And wags and wags.
If Lou isn't clamoring for my attention, he's trying to get Ike riled up.

Ike is like the cool teenage brother that Lou idolizes.

When Ike stands up, Lou stands up. When Ike stretches, Lou stretches. If Ike wants to sun him self on the deck, Lou is right behind him. If Ike is thirsty, Lou's throat is suddenly dry, too.

If Ike is as cool as Fonzie, then Lou is Potsie. Gus...well, Gus is just too cool to even be part of that analogy.
But more than anything in the world, Lou loves his Daddy. Sure, I'm the one who makes sure he is happy and fed...but Chris gets all of the wags and baroos.

I really tried for a good photo of Chris and Lou, but it wasn't going to happen. Staging a photo with a wiggly dog doesn't always work.
Now, after four months with us, I see that he's blossoming into a confident, grown-up dog.

Pretty photogenic, too. Which is good, considering he is now one of the more photographed dogs on earth now.
I didn't think a tiny little Basenji would shake up the routine of this house as much as he has. In a good way. He's in his forever home now.
And fitting in just fine.
