Gallery of Christmas Knits, Part 5

The Original Design (Free Pattern, Too)

January 10, 2007

My friend Mimi in Seattle is a hair and makeup artist. This year she made a request for her Christmas gift - something to keep her neck and ears warm while she was working on location.

Oh - and can you make it in baby blue?

And can it have fuzzy white trim?

Nooooo problem, I said.

So I made her this hooded scarf. It's a hood, and a scarf, in one!

Mimi - I could have used your help here with hair/makeup/photo styling!
I've written up the pattern and made it available here.

It's simple enough for a beginner, but the basketweave stitch keeps you on your toes, so it isn't mindless knitting.
I chose the basketweave stitch because even though this is a scarf, the way it is worn gives you a "non-public" side...so a knitted fabric with a "wrong" side was going to be okay.

I've always loved the look of basketweave, and it knits up dense enough for warmth.
For the times when the hood is too warm, it also works with the hood just dropped in the back. Looks sort of like a hoodie sweatshirt when you do that.

Brace yourself for the next topic...
The big news around here is that Chris and I have stepped into the world of Basenji fostering for Basenji Rescue.

This sweet man is Ace. He is three years old, and he has spent his whole life in a backyard. He is really underweight right now, with ribs and hips poking out all over him. (Note - Basenjis don't do well as outside dogs. They also prefer constant worship by humans.)

Surprisingly, he is sweet and affectionate...but we're still working on the peeing and pooping in the house thing. (With his smarts plus the fact that I'm home all day, he should catch on to this quickly.)
Trying to get a photo of him hasn't been easy this morning, because he is doing what we call "Velcro dog". He doesn't want to let me out of his sight for a second, so it's hard to create enough distance between the two of us for me to get a photo!
Take a look at this.

Our house is infested with Basenjis. In a good way.
