Gotta Build That Mountain

April 30, 2007

Mountain? Baby blanket? Whatev. The obsession is similar.

Remember the Movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind? Remember how the Richard Dreyfuss character became obsessed with building that mountain - at the expense of his hygiene and his sanity?
That's sort of how I'm feeling with this baby blanket. Without the mess of mud and baked beans, I guess. And I have been showering.

First, I was obsessed with figuring out my grandma's pattern. Then I was obsessed with the mailman bringing the yarn. Now I'm obsessed with knitting it.
I can sort of understand why. The pattern, while fairly simple, still requires my attention.

So it's fun to knit, and it really occupies my mind.
Also, it takes me over an hour to knit an inch of blanket.

If I want to see progress, I gotta keep at it.

I know I'll be able to finish the blanket well before the baby is born in August, but I'm still knitting as if my niece is due next week.
I'm about a third of the way through the blanket now, and I have to say...
...That much like the Richard Dreyfuss character, I'm satisfied with the mountain I'm building.

In fact, this could be the prettiest, softest thing I've ever knit.

I'll make the pattern available once the blanket is finished.
Stop. Doggie time.

Here's Lou, shaking the plushie (to break it's neck, ya know). He's practicing in case a real squirrel ever gets in the house.

Eww.
