Quality, Not Quantity

February 21, 2007

So I was plugging along on the tiny baby ski sweater when it came time to knit the sleeves. They are knit in the round with double-pointed needles. I pulled out my size ZERO DPNs, which happen to be 8 inches long...and I quickly realized that it was no fun to knit 40 stitches in the round on size 0, 8-inch needles. Way too much needle, way too few stitches.

So I headed out to the yarn shop...

...and came back with these teenytiny needles. Glorified toothpicks, actually.

These are a new product from Lantern Moon called Sox Stix. They are insanely expensive and made from ebony. I don't know how flexible ebony is, but I'm terrified that I'm going to break one.

Did I mention that they are a dream to knit with?

Anyway, so the little tiny needles got me thinking about how much I love teenytiny things. I have a Collection of Strange Tiny Things that I've found over the years, here are just a few of them...
This was actually a GIFT. Chris brought this back for me from a business trip to London...specifically, it came from a Christmas Cracker. I love this thing. I'm not a very demanding gift recipient, am I?

This treasure was made in Hong Kong. It was someone's job in Hong Kong to put the fried egg sticker in the bottom of this frying pan. I truly hope that person has job satisfaction.
Here's a little thing I keep close at hand. Just a simple red case. Nothing to see here folks, move it along...
...Because it is where I keep my concealed weapon.
What kind of expat would I have been to leave The Netherlands without a tiny tea set from Delft?
Or for that matter, could I have left Holland without a Jip en Janneke tea set? No.

Jip and Janneke are characters from a series of Dutch children's books. These books were my favorites to read while I was learning the language. Jip and Janneke are so NOT politically correct, so I found every story very surprising.
No matter how much he stretches out to make himself big, Lou can probably be considered part of my Collection of Strange Tiny Things.
