Yarn and Crawfish

June 16, 2006

Hello, readers. I'm having a bit of a problem. Remember how I said I had SO MANY photos that I needed to post to catch up? Well, I still do, but I want NEW ones. And Chris is in Europe with the camera.

But help is on the way! I ordered a new camera so the quality of photos should improve on verypink verysoon. I received a loving email from Amazon this morning telling me that there has never been a customer quite so special as me, our love and passion for each other is true and pure, and that they shipped my camera today.

So these next photos are still part of the big catch-up.

Okay, Yarn and Crawfish:

Last month (May 2006) I hosted a Yarn Swap Party. (I know all of you non-knitters are rolling your eyes right now. Whatev.) The core group of knitters from the central Houston Stitch n' Bitch plus a couple of further-away blog-friends showed up to drink and trade yarn.

Here's my dining room table before all of the yarn even showed up. Those poor tulips took a serious beating.
My crafty guests in alphabetical, orderly order were: Amy, Christine, Jet, Katherine, Katy and her daughter Claire, Kelly, Julia, Lorelei, Mo, Susan, and Zarina.

Rowdy women with pointed sticks.
Toward the end of the evening...like after midnight...we helped Amy out by throwing her new TWO POUNDS OF LACEWEIGHT YARN on my spindle and ballwinder. We took turns winding, because there was so much of it. At one point, the spindle FLEW off the table and on to the floor. Good times.

Here's Jet taking her turn to wind. She's posing calmly for the camera while her hand is flying on the winder. Lookit that spindle go!
Crawfish.

Chris' friends Mike and Jackie hosted a crawfish boil at their home. I had never even eaten a crawfish before, but I wasn't creeped out by them or anything. So I told Chris, "Yeah, I'll eat a crawfish". He said, "You're going to be hungry if you only eat one." Little did I know that you have to break open and eat like a thousand of these to get 100 calories out of the deal.

I only had the camera phone for these photos. But you get the idea. They boiled the crawfish in an enormous pot (it took like three guys to lift the crawfish out) and threw it on the table. They were very yummy.
Here's a nice hefty one.
I had a lot to learn about crawfish. Here's Chris, doing what is called "sucking the head". I tried it, but it was way too spicy for me. Whether or not you suck the head is supposed to show if you're a true Cajun or not. I am not.

This practice is really pretty gross. Everyone called the stuff inside the head "fatty". I called it "poopy".
Here's some of the party, surrounding the prey like a pack of wolves.
Two doggie photos for your enjoyment...

You know how dogs eat grass when they have a stomach ache and want to throw up? Well, we don't have a single blade of grass on our property. But Ike is resourceful, and he eats bamboo like a little panda bear. Barfy little Ling-Ling.
My boys made bunkbeds out of the chair.
Your random photo of the day:

In elementary school we were taught to line up for recess, for lunch, and before we got on the bus. This is a habit that we carry into adulthood. (At least Americans do. The Dutch don't line up.) Here are some Houstonians lining up to catch their bus home. It's so orderly and polite and American!

After living outside the US for a couple of years, it's scenes like this that make me smile and tear-up a little in appreciation.
